Booker T. Washington is a world class high school located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
It was founded in 1913 to serve the citizens of the African-American community and
named after the African-American education pioneer Booker T. Washington.
In 2008, Booker T. Washington placed 65th in Newsweek magazine's list
of top 1000 schools in the United States. The magazine ranked high schools
according to the ratio of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate
tests taken by all students at a school in 2006 to the number of graduating seniors. |

In 1973 Washington was chosen to be the first school for Tulsa’s desegregation
program and was established as a magnet school (one who accepts
students based on their academic merit rather than geographical location).
Every effort was made to find students that would profit, achieve, and grow
within the program. The school serves students from every racial, ethnic, religious,
and socio-economic group in Tulsa. Washington continues to thrive based on
the twin ideals of promoting excellence and acceptance of diversity.
This experience has enhanced the institution to be one of the most successful
secondary schools in the United States. The racially balanced student body boasts
championship basketball, football, and soccer teams, a nationally ranked academic
bowl team, physics team, and forensics team. |

Washington is at the forefront of academic trends and was the first
Tulsa Public High School to offer Advanced Placement courses.
It is one of only two high schools in Oklahoma to offer the International
Baccalaureate Diploma.
With the addition of the International Baccalaureate Diploma,
the program today attracts students who thrive in a challenging environment.
For many years, major universities and colleges, as well as technical, business,
art and music academies have actively recruited Booker T. Washington students.
The 2003-2004 school year marked the 90th anniversary of Washington
and the dedication of a new school building.
The dedication of the new building united past and present traditions with a
bright prospect for the future as a symbol of what public education can do for youth. |
